About mud volcanoes
What is a Mud Volcano?

Mud volcanoes are incredible geological phenomena that summon a mixture of mud, gases and water to the Earth’s surface. Unlike traditional volcanoes, they do not spew out molten lava but instead deliver a unique spectacle of thick, bubbling mud. They arise when pressurised pockets of gas and liquids beneath the Earth’s surface force their way upward, pushing mud and sediments along with them. This combination of factors creates these enthralling formations, each with its own distinct characteristics. Mud volcanoes can be found in various parts of the world, with notable concentrations in Azerbaijan. These seismically active formations provide clues to the dynamic forces that shape our planet.

Geographic Distribution & Significance

The ecosystems surrounding mud volcanoes are distinct and support a staggering variety of plant and animal species adapted to the challenging conditions. These habitats often harbour unique and rare organisms, also making mud volcanoes of interest to ecologists and conservationists. Scientists continue to study mud volcanoes to deepen understanding of their formation, behaviour and the role they play in Earth’s geology. Ongoing research of mud volcanoes contributes to advancements in seismology, geophysics and geothermal energy development.

Eruptions & Environmental Impact

Mud volcanoes exhibit a range of activity, from slow and steady flows to sudden, explosive eruptions. The resulting landforms can vary from conical mounds, via elongated channels, to even flat crater-like structures. The unique shapes and sizes make each one an enthralling sight. They play a crucial role in Earth's inner processes by releasing trapped gases, minerals and hydrocarbons, contributing to the planet's overall chemical balance. Additionally, they supply insights into subterranean activity and aid scientists in studying the Earth's crust.

Azerbaijan’s majestic mud volcanoes
Nature’s Fiery Creations

An encounter with Azerbaijan’s mud volcanoes gives visitors a rare chance to behold one of our planet's most outstanding displays and deepens their understanding of the Earth's geological marvels. Azerbaijan boasts the world's largest concentration of mud volcanoes, with over 400 scattered throughout the country, treating visitors to a special opportunity to see the geological rarities and scenic spectacles of the region. These unusual sites are active and constantly changing, with eruptions occurring regularly. Azerbaijan is also renowned for its incredible submarine mud volcanoes. The Caspian Sea is home to over 140 submarine sites, while within the Baku Archipelago, eight islands stand as a testament to their rare origins, forming a truly unique landscape filled with allure and mystery.

Gilinj Mud Volcano

Gilinj - which means ‘sword’ in Azerbaijani - is a mud volcano that consists of a row of eight cones arranged sequentially that extend towards a valley. The active cones of this mud volcano emit a significant amount of ‘breccia’ (a type of rock consisting of angular fragments) onto the Earth's surface. Towards the north-east, this breccia is spread over an area of 20 hectares, forming two strips with a length of 300-500 metres and a width of up to 50 metres in some places. There is no information in scientific sources about powerful eruptions of Gilinj Mud Volcano. However, the discovery of geological layers belonging to the Middle Pleistocene and Upper Pleistocene eras in some excavations near the mud volcano indicates that it was active as far back as between 770,000 and 126,000 years ago. Near Gilinj is Toraghay Mud Volcano, which has made it into the Guinness World Records as the world's largest mud volcano.

What to see

You can experience more than merely observing the volcanoes at the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex. The exhibits here will provide you with a deeper understanding of the rich biodiversity surrounding the mud volcanoes and the intriguing interplay between these creatures and the volcanoes. The exhibition displays nearly 100 animal skeletons related to the fauna of Azerbaijan and the rest of the world, up to 900 species of dried insects and creatures preserved in formalin solution. Additionally, it features a variety of reptiles and amphibians that live in water and on land, as well as paleontological exhibits.

01
The History of Planet Earth

Our exhibits will assist you in delving into various facets of Earth's natural history, including biology, geology and palaeontology. The examination of animal skeletons enables scientists not only to understand the anatomy of living creatures but also to investigate the evolutionary processes that took place over different epochs.

Embark on a journey spanning over a hundred million years of our planet's history to uncover the origins of life on Earth.

02
Bones and beyond

The exhibition features skeletons of giraffes, bears, tigers, lions, wolves, pumas, wild boars and numerous other animals. Additionally, there are interactive demonstrations that reveal the process of fossilization, as visitors will have the opportunity to explore the anatomy and behaviour of these creatures. Within the exhibition hall, you can observe the skeletal remains of animals that are categorised into various types based on their bone structure - long tubular, short, flat and composite.

Mineral Exhibits
